The 9 Step Whisky Process
1. Malting
It starts with barley, which is soaked in water, allowed to sprout, and then dried in kilns to halt the germination process. This produces malted barley.
2. Milling
The malted barley is ground into a coarse powder called grist.
3. Mashing
The grist is mixed with hot water in a mash tun to create a sugary liquid called wort.
4. Fermentation
The wort is transferred to fermentation vessels, typically wooden or stainless steel, where yeast is added. Yeast consumes the sugars and converts them into alcohol, producing a liquid called “wash”.
5. Distillation
The wash is distilled in copper pot stills or column stills. Distillation separates the alcohol from impurities, creating a higher-proof liquid known as “new make spirit”.
6. Maturation
The new make spirit is aged in oak barrels, where it interacts with the wood, gaining flavor, color, and complexity over time. This process can last several years or even decades.
7. Blending
In some cases, whisky from different barrels or batches is blended to achieve a consistent flavor profile.
8. Bottling
Once the whisky has reached the desired maturity, it is filtered, diluted to the desired bottling strength, and then bottled.
9. Enjoyment
Finally, the whisky is ready to be savored, either neat, with water, or on the rocks, revealing the culmination of years of craftsmanship and expertise in a single glass.
